Plotdigger Films is the combined effort of award-winning artist Ryan Nicholson and his father, Dr. Roy Nicholson. Ryan's obsession with horror movies started with Roy taking him to the cinema at an early age to view films by directors such as David Cronenberg, John Carpenter, Tobe Hooper and Wes Craven. With the early '80s home video boom, Ryan started renting movies by other directors whose films weren't often screened in Canadian theatres: creators such as Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci and George A. Romero. Ryan didn't have a Super-8 camera to play around with, so instead he chose to mess around with clay and latex. His entry into the world of cinema was as a monster-maker, creating the special make-up effects for such blockbusters as Final Destination and Scary Movie.
Under the banner of Flesh and Fantasy Inc., Roy and Ryan created creature effects and prosthetics for a variety of movies and TV shows for nearly a decade. With Flesh and Fantasy Inc. firmly established, a scheme to write and produce their own movies began to hatch from the twisted psyches of the Nicholsons. With their first script, The Dig, the two writers created a good old-fashioned monster movie. "We make monsters for a living," the duo said. "Why not make one monster, the creature of all creatures, and make it for our own production instead of someone else's?" Thus, Plotdigger Films was born.
Though The Dig didn't enter production, Plotdigger Films brought other projects to the fore. Starting with Torched in 2004, a co-production with Creepy Six Films, Ryan directed his first feature-length opus of horror. Inspired by movies like I Spit on Your Grave and Ms.45, Torched stokes the flames of a rape/revenge story until it sears everything and everyone in sight. 2006 and 2008 brought us Live Feed and Gutterballs, respectively, and several more features are either in production or post-production at the moment!
